Scented pine cones

A bowlful of these by the door or on the mantel fills a room with cinnamon and clove for weeks — no candles, no plug-ins.

You'll need

• Dried pine cones
• 2 tbsp. ground cinnamon or a handful of cinnamon sticks
• 1 tbsp. whole cloves
• A few drops cinnamon or orange essential oil (optional, for extra strength)
• A paper bag

How to make them

1. Add the pine cones and spices to a paper bag and shake gently to coat.
2. Add a few drops of essential oil directly onto a few cones if you'd like a stronger scent.
3. Seal the bag and let the cones sit for at least 3 days, shaking once a day.
4. Display in a bowl, basket, or tucked into garland — refresh with a few more drops of oil as the scent fades.
