Tin can luminaries

A star-punched tin can luminary glowing on a porch step

An old craft with a simple trick: freezing water inside the can lets you punch a pattern without denting it.

You'll need

How to make them

  1. Fill each can with water and freeze solid, at least a few hours.
  2. Sketch or freehand a simple pattern (stars, dots, a snowflake) onto the frozen can.
  3. Punch along the pattern with a hammer and nail, working carefully.
  4. Let the ice melt, dry the can, and place a battery tea light inside.
